This is the huge wrist version of Effie C's new and hot, hot, hot line of midnight black onyx sand cast bracelets!
Effie’s so famous that all you have to say to say is “Effie” and all collectors know immediately who you’re talking about. She’s been making fine jewelry for years and years and many members of her immediate family and their spouses also make fine jewelry as well. It seems as if every year stories circulate about Effie’s “poor” health or “failing” eyesight, confinement to a nursing home, or even her "recent death." While the couple of years have been sad ones for Effie -- one of her daughters died of diabetes complications -- though advancing in years Effie’s health is fine as is her eyesight or reports of her death are needless to say premature and she's not in a nursing home. She continues to produce her famous snake jewelry in her Zuni, NM studio, and this petite grandmother still cuts all her own stones for use in her turquoise and coral jewelry.
The seven stones cover all but about 2½" of the exterior surface of this sand cast bracelet except the small areas between each stone.
In addition to the first-rate craftsmanship, perhaps Effie C’s most distinguishing characteristic is her trademark pairs of entwined, turquoise-eyed overlay 3-D sand cast snakes. In Native American culture, the snake was often used as a symbol of defiance as settlers and the cavalry moved westward. During the 19th century, the Zuni tribe ultimately succeeded in hiding from the numerous forced relocation roundups conducted by the US Army that amounted to poorly disguised genocide. They hid on Zuni Mountain and today still live on their tribal lands.
These two snakes are fully three dimensional, pure sterling silver overlays bonded onto the bracelet, wrapped around each stone and wrapped around each other and the center turquoise stone. Each oval onyx cabochon stone measures 7/16ths" by 3/8ths." Stampings along the rbacelet's edges will vary as each bracelet and stamping is done by hand.
Effie completed the decoration of this simple but dramatic bracelet by stamping both edges with rattlesnake jaw designs that run from shank to shank. In Native American culture, the presence of rattlesnake jaw designs on jewelry is believed to give added strength to the wearer.
Effie makes quite a variety of sizes in both men’s and ladies bracelets, so if you’re comparing bracelets, make sure you’re comparing the same bracelet.
This bracelet measures 1" in width from terminal to terminal, has an inside measurement of 5¾," and a carefully but minimally adjustable opening gap of 1¼." If your wrist is 7" to no more than 7¼" in circumference, this will fit you with little or no careful adjustment of the shanks.
This is a genuine Effie C bracelet purchased in Zuni, New Mexico and her authentic hallmark and tribal affiliation stamps are on the back.
