Lot 4 Primitive Technology Tools Ancestoral Skill Books

Included in this lot are four nice soft cover books. They are listed and described alphabetically by title:

Old Tools – New Eyes: A Primal Primer of Flintknapping by Bob Patten

Old Tools – New Eyes is definitely not a replay of information available elsewhere.  It is desnsely packed with fresh ideas and novel viewpoints resulting from the author’s long experience of experimentation, demonstration, study, and professional contacts.  You do not need to take up flintknapping to enjoy this book.  It allows collectors and archaeologists to appreciate the efforts of early flintknappers as well.

Old Tools – New Eyes:

·         Emphasizes the relevance of flintknapping to archaeology

·         Explains the physical basis for fracture and shows how to control it

·         Provides multiple perspectives to accommodate different levels of knowledge

·         Is highly illustrated – from the worker’s point of view

·         Contains “recipes” for Clovis, Folsom, and Eden point styles – the original way

·         Contains detailed instructions on how to perform flintknapping tasks

·         Explains how to apply strategy to the proves of flintknapping

·         Shares 40 years of the author’s flintknapping experience

·         Allows a student to link the appearance of an artifact to the way it was made.

Bob Patten has demonstrated how to make stone tools by primitive methods for thirty years.  His work with various archaeologists includes the Smithsonian Institute.  In 1990 the BBC showed him making a Clovis point in The Search for the First Americans.

Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills by Steven M. Watts

Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills is a collection of information and images put together over a twenty-year period in a search for hands-on communication with our shared Stone Age past. The story of the Stone Age is our story, and primitive technology is a way for anyone who wants to understand that shared history. Watts makes the case that the learning and practice of aboriginal skills helps us connect with our remote past, encourages us to participate in the shared inheritance of primitive ('first') skills.

“At long last Steve Watts has put together the book we've all been waiting for--Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills. For years we've been treated to a tantalizing, trickling stream of Watts' tidbits of aboriginal skills. They have been scattered far and wide in various publications and handouts. But now, he has assembled them all under one cover. With this book, Watts has laid us a trail we will be following for years to come. And so our ancestral skills and values are passed into the future." -- Errett Callahan, PhD

Primitive technology can help us explore the world of our prehistoric past. Insights into our ancestors may provide insights into ourselves. Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills is the result of more than 20 years of one man's thinking and writing about the stone-age heritage we all share. It's a book designed to inform and inspire
Prehistorian Steven M. Watts directs the Aboriginal Studies Program at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina. He is a founding board member and current president of the Society of Primitive Technology.

After Word

As the author says, "If it's not in context, it's just arts and crafts." Whether in a class or in this book, he sets out to not just teach how to recreate objects, but to hopefully understand the people, places and reasons behind how and why they were made. While this book would not be a hand-holding, color photo, step-by-step manual for the complete novice, it is a compilation of well-organized information and inspiration for the person who's already used to working with his/her hands. For those who dabble in this field to those who are serious students, the greatest asset of this book is it's clear organization of information that's readily accessible.

The black and white photos with the author's many illustrations clarify the details and are the highlight of the book. I've always been in awe of the way the author is able to take the depth of information in his head and hands and weave it together to make it so accessible to his students. Through his own illustrations and a poet's sense of essential sparseness, Steve conveys incredible amounts of information, and being a perpetual student, himself, his works are always laced with humor and wonder.

Primitive Technology II: Ancestoral Skills From the Society of Primitive Technology edited by David Wescott

The Inuit around Hudson Bay have forgotten how to make the hunting weapons used by their ancestors. Can a white man from Virginia teach them the old ways? Yup. Can aboriginal peoples teach “moderns” about adaptability, patient attention to craft, and working with resources at hand? Yup. Primitive Technology celebrates craft and the patient detective work involved in learning endangered skills.  Fascinating stuff!

The Stone Age is the common denominator of mankind, and through experimental archeology-the relearning and replication of ancient skills-we take a step of discovery and understanding into this rich past. In this collection, drawn from the pages of the Bulletin of Primitive Technology, learn to create tools to fabricate more complex technologies; master the arts of the bow and arrow; build a shelter or fashion clothing from fibers or buckskin. Primitive Technology II: Ancestral Skills provides the guide to rediscovery of the skills and crafts that bind us all into this great human family.

David Wescott is author of Camping in the Old Style and editor of Primitive Technology: A Book of Earth Skills. Formerly education director for the Boulder Outdoor School, he has been a leading figure in wilderness education for more than thirty years. He lives with his wife in Rexburg, Idaho.

Primitive Technology: A Book of Earth Skills From the Society of Primitive Technology edited by David Wescott

This volume, a selection of articles within The Bulletin of Primitive Technology, portrays the history, philosophies, and personal journeys of authorities on Primitive Technology, imparting skills that built the success of mankind.
