| | Publisher's Note | 'Discovering and Restoring Antique Furniture' is a highly practical illustrated guide to providing essential and detailed information on the most commonly encountered problems in furniture restoration and conservation. All stages are clearly explained and generously illustrated with black and white pictures and colour photographs and line drawings. Make your home look as if you spend a fortune on antiques--and have a lot of fun doing it. Antique furniture has never been more sought after. As the pieces in best condition change hands at higher and higher prices, the ordinary buyer may have to consider pieces in more rundown condition. You can own gallery-quality antiques at a fraction of the price if you master the three major elements of successful antiquing: discovering the secrets of construction that help you date the furniture, restoring damaged structures and surfaces, and applying the finishing techniques to return the piece to its original luster. Instruction on metalwork and other specialist processes makes it possible to save even the most difficult-to-repair finds. These tips and techniques will help you reach that satisfying moment when the hidden beauty of a lost treasure is finally unveiled by your hands.
| | Industry reviews | Based on the premise that antiques in poor condition are more affordable for the average person, Bennett presents a guide to identifying authentic antiques and gives instructions for restoring them. He covers the construction methods to look for to determine genuine antiques but leaves out references to style, for which a good furniture book such as Sotheby's Guide to American Antique Furniture (LJ 1/96) is needed. This book's strength lies in its instructions for structural and finish repairs to wood furniture and in details like the explanation of how to duplicate brass fixtures. Amateurs might want to start with the easier approach found in Robert W. Wood's All Thumbs Guide to Fixing Furniture (Tab, 1994), but those interested in more advanced directions will find this book useful. Breitman
